Hysteria’ halts Owen talks
Description
Rate This ArticleMICHAEL OWEN has blamed the “hysteria” at Newcastle for casting doubts over his future on Tyneside.
The Toon skipper’s current deal expires in the summer and he is yet to sign a new contract.
England striker Owen is free to talk to clubs next month but says the dismissal of Kevin Keegan in September put everything on the back burner.
He said: “It is something that has been spoken about for a long, long time now.
“I had talks with the club about five or six months ago. We were negotiating but then all the hysteria happened.
“Kevin Keegan left and a lot of the people on the board as well left and some of those people were the ones we were negotiating with.

“Since then there has been so much happening that we haven’t resumed.
“The club obviously haven’t got back to us yet. As soon as Joe Kinnear came in as manager he mentioned that he wanted to do that.
“So we are going to speak to the club whenever he organises a meeting or anything like that.
“It’s just circumstances.”
Owen, 29 on Sunday, who bagged a clinical brace in the 2-2 draw with Stoke on Saturday, is being tracked by Chelsea boss Big Phil Scolari.
